Our Story
Generations of Tradition.
We come from a family of artists—painters, actors, writers, musicians, ballerinas, and cooks. My grandmother, Matilde Maravillas Fernandez, who is my inspiration and muse, came to Hollywood from Spain in the 1950s to pursue her dreams as an artist. Her story is incredible, epitomizing the guts and passion she was known for. I never fully grasped how eclectic my family was until I began piecing it together in my late teens. Finding my own identity as an artist has taken much longer and is a point of view that continues to evolve.
Later in life, my grandmother, became not only a dedicated patron of the healing arts and philanthropist, but she also championed the artistic and educational pursuits of each of her children and grandchildren. She infused our lives with culture and kept us connected to our Spanish roots through travel, food, and priceless family gatherings in Spain, and California. She had a magnetic energy and an infectious laugh. Chachi encouraged us to take risks and approach life with love and abandon—to be creative and passionate, to seek what serves the greater good, and to pursue what sets one’s soul on fire.
Campesino is an homage to my grandmother and her "religion of love." It honors all of my Spanish and Sicilian relatives and ancestors—people who lived simply, yet abundantly. It is with great honor that I share our heritage and our recipes with you.
